Andrea Kimi Antonelli converts pole position into his ninth Grand Prix victory of the season at the United States Grand Prix, moving to the edge of a maiden Formula 1 world championship.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli delivered a commanding performance at the United States Grand Prix, taking victory at the Circuit of The Americas to move within touching distance of the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship.
The Mercedes driver continued his remarkable 2026 campaign with a superb victory in Austin, Texas, on Sunday 25 October, converting pole position into his ninth Grand Prix win of the season.
Antonelli kept his composure across 56 laps at the demanding Circuit of The Americas, executing a one-stop strategy to finish ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen. He crossed the line approximately 13 seconds clear of Leclerc, underlining the pace and control behind his latest victory.
A statement drive in Texas
Starting from pole, Antonelli made a clean getaway and quickly established himself at the front of the field. While rivals opted for alternative tyre strategies and additional pit stops, Mercedes stuck to its plan, allowing the young Italian to maintain control of the race.
Verstappen remained a contender during the early stages, but a second pit stop and technical difficulties compromised his challenge. Leclerc capitalised to secure second place, with Verstappen completing the podium.
Behind the leading trio, Lewis Hamilton finished fourth for Ferrari, while Lando Norris took fifth. Mercedes team-mate George Russell finished eighth after a challenging afternoon that included a five-second penalty.
The championship is almost within reach
Antonelli arrived in Austin with a significant championship advantage and the opportunity to secure the title if several results fell his way. Although he delivered the victory required, Hamilton’s fourth-place finish and Russell’s eighth meant the championship battle remained mathematically open.
The result nevertheless leaves Antonelli in an exceptionally strong position heading to next weekend’s Mexico City Grand Prix, where a maiden world title could be secured depending on the results.
At just 20 years old, Antonelli stands on the verge of a historic achievement that could make him the youngest Formula 1 World Champion in the sport’s history.
Mercedes’ rising star takes another step towards greatness
Antonelli’s Austin triumph was about more than another trophy. It demonstrated the race management, consistency and strategic execution required to fight for a world championship.
With nine victories already secured in 2026, the Italian has emerged as the defining figure of the season. One more strong weekend in Mexico could turn an outstanding campaign into a landmark moment for both Antonelli and Mercedes.
The celebrations may have to wait a little longer, but after conquering Austin, the destination of the 2026 Drivers’ Championship is firmly in Antonelli’s hands.
GridXtreme verdict: On the brink in Texas
Kimi Antonelli delivered when it mattered, combining speed with a controlled strategic performance to take a ninth win of the season at the Circuit of The Americas.
The title was not sealed in Texas, with Hamilton and Russell scoring enough to keep the mathematics alive for another round, but Formula 1 could be preparing to welcome a new champion in Mexico City next weekend.
