GridXtreme founder Ron Overall reflects on a weekend at CarFest in Silverstone, covering the event behind the lens, meeting former Formula 1 presenter Jake Humphrey and his family, and the unexpected moments that make motorsport special beyond the lap times.

There are some weekends in motorsport that are all about the racing. Others are about the people, the atmosphere and simply being surrounded by everything that makes you love cars.

For me, CarFest at Silverstone was very much the latter and what a weekend it turned out to be.

Arriving at Silverstone always feels special, but seeing the famous circuit transformed for CarFest gives the venue a completely different character.

The iconic track remained at the heart of the event, but surrounding it was a celebration of everything from motorsport and performance cars to music, entertainment, personalities and families simply enjoying a fantastic weekend together.

For GridXtreme, it was also an opportunity to experience CarFest from behind the camera and capture the atmosphere that doesn't always make it into traditional motorsport coverage.

Behind the lens

Being able to attend with photographer accreditation gave me the opportunity to experience the weekend differently.

Rather than simply watching what was happening, I was constantly looking through the camera, looking for the next photograph, the next car, the next moment or the next story that could help tell the bigger picture of CarFest.

And Silverstone certainly provides plenty of opportunities.

From cars taking to the circuit to the activity around the paddock and display areas, there was always something happening.

For a photographer, that's exactly what you want.

One of the highlights was meeting Jake Humphrey and his family

But sometimes the best moments at an event aren't necessarily the ones you planned for.

One of the highlights of my weekend was meeting Jake Humphrey, the former Formula 1 presenter, and his family.

What immediately struck me was just how lovely and approachable they were.

Jake was making his way around the grid, doing what he has always been so good at, talking to people, engaging with drivers and making time for those around him.

While Jake continued around the grid walk speaking to drivers, his family patiently waited nearby.

That gave me the opportunity to spend some time talking with them and, in true GridXtreme fashion, I couldn't resist conducting an impromptu interview.

They were an absolute delight.

Friendly, relaxed and incredibly easy to talk to, they were more than happy to chat and gave me a fascinating perspective away from the cameras and the world of Formula 1 presenting.

Meanwhile, Jake continued working his way along the grid, stopping to speak with drivers and members of the public.

Watching him interact with everyone was a great reminder of why he became such a familiar and popular face during his years covering Formula 1.

There was no obvious sense of simply rushing through the grid. Jake took the time to speak to people, creating genuine interactions rather than simply ticking boxes.

And while Jake was busy doing what he does best, his family waited patiently and enjoyed the occasion.

For me, it became one of those unexpected moments that you simply can't plan for.

You arrive at an event looking for the perfect photograph and sometimes you end up with a great story instead.

Meeting Jake and his family was certainly one of those stories I'll take away from CarFest.

More than just cars

What makes CarFest different from a conventional race weekend is the sheer variety.

You can spend one moment concentrating on a car heading onto the circuit and the next find yourself surrounded by music, entertainment, celebrities, families and car enthusiasts.

That mixture creates some fantastic photographic opportunities.

It also highlights something important about motorsport and the wider car community.

It isn't just about lap times.

It's about the people.

It's about the stories behind the cars, the personalities involved and the memories created when thousands of enthusiasts come together.

Silverstone through a different lens

I've photographed motorsport at Silverstone before, but CarFest presented a completely different challenge.

At a conventional race meeting, the focus is relatively straightforward: cars, drivers, competition and results.

CarFest is much broader.

The challenge was to capture the feeling of the event, the excitement of the crowds, the variety of cars, the personalities, the entertainment and the sense that everyone had come together simply to enjoy themselves.

For GridXtreme, that's exactly the kind of storytelling I want us to continue developing.

We don't just want to report on who won a race.

We want to show what it feels like to be there.

The unexpected moments matter

One of the things I've enjoyed most about developing GridXtreme is discovering that covering motorsport isn't always about getting the perfect shot of a car travelling at 150mph.

Sometimes it's the photograph of someone smiling.

Sometimes it's an unexpected conversation.

Sometimes it's meeting someone you've watched on television for years and discovering that, away from the cameras, they're simply a genuinely nice person.

The encounter with Jake Humphrey and his family was exactly that.

It wasn't something I'd planned into my weekend schedule.

It just happened.

And those are often the memories that stay with you.

A weekend to remember

As my CarFest weekend at Silverstone comes to an end, I leave with hundreds of photographs, plenty of memories and an even greater appreciation for events that bring different parts of the motoring world together.

CarFest isn't a traditional race meeting and that's precisely why it works.

It's loud, colourful, unpredictable and packed with characters.

It's about cars, music, entertainment and motorsport, but ultimately it's about people.

For someone who loves cars, motorsport and photography, it's difficult to ask for much more.

For GridXtreme, CarFest at Silverstone wasn't simply another event to cover.

It was another opportunity to tell stories, meet people and capture moments that might otherwise simply disappear into the weekend.

And judging by the photographs and memories I've come away with, it's a chapter I'm going to enjoy looking back on for a long time.
