Câmara wins Monza feature as Tsolov extends F2 championship lead

Rafael Câmara converted pole into a controlled feature race victory at the Temple of Speed, but Nikola Tsolov left Monza with a bigger championship margin after a measured drive to second.

Monza rewards bravery into the first chicane and patience everywhere else, and the feature race turned on which of the front runners understood that distinction. Câmara led from pole, but the race was never going to be settled at turn one. With the slipstream along the Rettifilo Centro and the approach to the Variante Ascari, a leader who defends the inside into the braking zone is one slow reaction away from losing two places in a single corner.

Câmara managed the opening stint by leaving the door open just enough to discourage a lunge, then using the clean exit of the second chicane to reset the gap. It is a technique that only works when the car ahead is genuinely quick in a straight line, and the Invicta entry had enough top speed to make the strategy repeatable across thirty laps.

The decisive moment came at the mandatory pit stop window. Tsolov, running second, stopped a lap earlier than the leader and used the clean air to produce a sequence of qualifying laps on fresh rubber. The undercut closed the gap to under a second, but Câmara responded once his own tyres were up to temperature and held the lead into the final third.

Behind them Alexander Dunne took the sprint win earlier in the day and followed it with a combative drive to fourth in the feature, recovering from a slow stop that dropped him behind the Campos pair. Gabriele Minì finished third to keep himself in the title conversation, but the arithmetic now favours the two ahead of him.

The championship picture leaving Monza is clearer than the one that arrived. Tsolov leads on 191 points with Câmara second on 174 and Minì third on 167. Five rounds remain, but the spread between first and third is now 24 points, and the chasing group can no longer afford a non score. From here the leader races to a result while the rest race to a rescue.

The next round is Madrid at Madring, scheduled for 10, 12 Sep. It is round 11 of the season and the first of the closing stretch on a circuit the field has limited data on. How the championship leader handles an unknown surface will indicate whether the current margin is a foundation to build on or a high water mark the chasers can erode.
