Preining leads GTWC driver standings as Manthey Porsche dominate Sprint Cup

Sprint Cup racing rewards a completely different skill set to endurance GT, and one crew has spent the season exploiting it ruthlessly.

A GT World Challenge Sprint race is sixty minutes long with one mandatory driver change. There is no time to recover from a bad first lap, no fuel saving phase, and no meaningful tyre degradation to exploit. It is qualifying pace plus a pit stop, repeated twice a weekend.

Manthey have treated that format as an engineering problem. Their Porsche 911 GT3 R runs a set up biased towards single lap performance rather than long run stability, which costs them nothing in a race where no stint lasts longer than half an hour. Preining has converted that into front row starts at a rate no rival has matched.

The driver change window is the other half of the story. Sprint Cup pit stops have a minimum time, so the gain comes from precision rather than speed: belts, wheel and seat position rehearsed to the point where the stop lands inside a two tenths band every time. Over a season those tenths add up to a championship lead.

Where the crew is vulnerable is the Endurance Cup rounds, which carry more points and demand exactly the traits the Sprint set up sacrifices. Spa in particular has a way of rewarding cars built for tyre life over cars built for outright pace, and the BMW and Ferrari crews have the stronger long run records.

The championship therefore hinges on whether a Sprint specialist can survive the endurance weekends. So far the answer has been yes, not by winning them, but by finishing them without incident, which in GT3 racing is a skill in its own right.

The 2026 Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe standings capture the state of play recorded After Spa 24H, Endurance Cup Round 2. Thomas Preining leads the drivers classification on 142 points, 7 clear of Alessandro Pier Guidi on 135, with Sheldon van der Linde third on 121. A lead of 7 points is a meaningful cushion at this stage of the year, but with 2 rounds still to run it is not yet a decisive one. The championship will be settled by how the front runners negotiate the rounds that remain, not by the margin they carry into them.

Behind the leading group the field is tightly compressed. Mirko Bortolotti holds fourth on 108, Maxime Martin is fifth on 97, and Maro Engel completes the top six on 84. The spread across those three positions is just 24 points, which means a single strong weekend can reshape the order behind the title contenders. The midfield battle is where the championship depth is most visible, and where the cost of one bad round is highest.

In the teams classification, Manthey Racing (Porsche) leads on 142 points from Iron Lynx (Ferrari) on 135 and Schubert Motorsport (BMW) on 121. The teams standings are often the more reliable indicator of outright pace, because they smooth out the individual bad weekends that every driver encounters across a full season. A team that places both its entries consistently in the points will accumulate constructors score at a rate that single car brilliance cannot match.

The depth of the teams championship reflects how competitive the GT World Challenge grid has become. Manthey Racing (Porsche) holds the lead on 142 points, but the gap to Iron Lynx (Ferrari) on 135 is small enough that a single double points finish can close it. Behind them, Schubert Motorsport (BMW) sits third on 121, close enough to capitalise if either of the top two stumbles. The constructors race is a long game, and it rewards reliability over heroics.

The recent rounds have done most to shape the current standings. Endurance, Nürburgring at Nürburgring, Germany was won by Pier Guidi, Sprint Cup, Paul Ricard at Circuit Paul Ricard, France went the way of Bortolotti, and the most recent completed round, Endurance, Spa 24H at Spa Francorchamps, Belgium, was won by van der Linde. Each of those results shifted the points arithmetic at the top and reset the momentum that the title contenders carry into the next weekend.
