O'Ward wins Bommarito 500 as Palou extends IndyCar championship lead

Pato O'Ward took a measured oval victory at World Wide Technology Raceway, while Álex Palou extended his championship lead with a composed top five as the title fight heads for Portland.

The Bommarito 500 at World Wide Technology Raceway is a short oval where the racing is decided in clean air and in traffic, often within the same stint. The groove is narrow enough that a leading car in clean track can pull a second a lap, but a car caught in the dirty air of a backmarker can lose that gap in a single corner. Managing the difference is the whole game.

O'Ward qualified on the front row and led the opening stint, then cycled back to the front through the first pit cycle as the Arrow McLaren crew delivered a stop that gained two positions on track. From there the race became a fuel and tyre calculation, with the Chevrolet powertrain showing its strongest oval form of the season on the longer runs.

Josef Newgarden finished second for Team Penske, closing to within a point of O'Ward in the standings, but the bigger story was Palou. The championship leader drove a quiet race to fourth, avoided the lapped traffic incidents that caught two of the title contenders, and left Gateway with a larger points margin than he arrived with.

Colton Herta completed the podium for Andretti Global, recovering from a mid race penalty for an unsafe release. Scott McLaughlin and Will Power rounded out the top five for Penske, underlining the team's oval strength as the calendar turns to the closing road and street circuits.

The 2026 NTT IndyCar Series standings after Gateway show Palou leading on 518 points, 30 clear of O'Ward on 488, with Newgarden third on 487. Three rounds remain at Portland, Laguna Seca and the finale. The gap is not yet decisive, but Palou can now race to a result rather than a rescue, and every rival has to take the risks he can decline.

The next round is Portland International Raceway, scheduled for 12, 14 Sep. It is round 15 of the season and the first of the closing road course stretch. How the championship leader handles the technical demands of Portland will indicate whether the current margin is a foundation to build on or a high water mark the chasers can erode.
