Palou leads IndyCar standings after dominant Indianapolis 500 triumph

A month of May that ended in Victory Lane has given the championship leader something no rival can now replicate: a points cushion built on the biggest race of the year.

The Indianapolis 500 is worth double points, which makes it the single most distorting event on the IndyCar calendar. Win it, and a season that was going reasonably becomes a championship campaign. Crash out of it, and four good road course weekends are needed to recover.

Palou won it in the manner that has come to define his career: no visible risk, no defining overtake, no moment where the race looked like it might get away. The fuel numbers were met every stint, the pit stops landed inside a tenth of the target window, and the final restart was managed by taking the inside line early and refusing to be drawn into a two abreast run into turn one.

What separates him from the field is not speed on the ovals, several rivals are quicker in traffic at Indianapolis, but the absence of variance. Across the season his worst finish is inside the top ten, and the number of laps he has spent outside the leading group is remarkably low. IndyCar is the most competitive open wheel field in the world by qualifying spread, and consistency of that kind is close to unrepeatable.

The road and street rounds remain the battlefield. Newgarden and the Penske cars have the stronger record on the heavier braking circuits, and the street rounds at Toronto and Nashville routinely produce results that bear no relation to pace. There are enough of those events left for the standings to compress.

But the structural point stands. The championship leader has taken the double points race, holds the tiebreak on wins, and does not need to gamble at any remaining round. The rest of the field does, and in IndyCar gambling usually means restarts, and restarts mean contact.

The 2026 NTT IndyCar Series standings capture the state of play recorded After Round 12, Honda Indy 200 at Mid Ohio. Álex Palou leads the drivers classification on 438 points, 26 clear of Josef Newgarden on 412, with Pato O'Ward third on 398. A lead of 26 points is a meaningful cushion at this stage of the year, but with 4 rounds still to run it is not yet a decisive one. The championship will be settled by how the front runners negotiate the rounds that remain, not by the margin they carry into them.

Behind the leading group the field is tightly compressed. Colton Herta holds fourth on 371, Scott McLaughlin is fifth on 355, and Marcus Ericsson completes the top six on 302. The spread across those three positions is just 69 points, which means a single strong weekend can reshape the order behind the title contenders. The midfield battle is where the championship depth is most visible, and where the cost of one bad round is highest.

In the teams classification, Chip Ganassi Racing leads on 438 points from Team Penske on 1014 and Andretti Global on 951. The teams standings are often the more reliable indicator of outright pace, because they smooth out the individual bad weekends that every driver encounters across a full season. A team that places both its entries consistently in the points will accumulate constructors score at a rate that single car brilliance cannot match.

The depth of the teams championship reflects how competitive the IndyCar Series grid has become. Chip Ganassi Racing holds the lead on 438 points, but the gap to Team Penske on 1014 is small enough that a single double points finish can close it. Behind them, Andretti Global sits third on 951, close enough to capitalise if either of the top two stumbles. The constructors race is a long game, and it rewards reliability over heroics.

The recent rounds have done most to shape the current standings. Iowa Race 2 at Iowa Speedway was won by Newgarden, Honda Indy Toronto at Exhibition Place, Toronto went the way of Palou, and the most recent completed round, Honda Indy 200 Mid Ohio at Mid Ohio Sports Car Course, was won by Herta. Each of those results shifted the points arithmetic at the top and reset the momentum that the title contenders carry into the next weekend.

The form guide across the recent rounds reads as a study in momentum. Herta took the most recent victory at Mid Ohio Sports Car Course, Palou won at Exhibition Place, Toronto before that, and Newgarden prevailed at Iowa Speedway. No single driver has dominated the recent sequence, which is why the points lead at the top has remained stable rather than stretching. The closing rounds will decide whether that pattern holds or one contender finally strings together the run of results that settles the title.
