Prado leads MXGP world championship with four rounds remaining

Two motos per round, deteriorating surfaces and start gate position, motocross world championships are won by riders who are fastest at the moment of least grip.

MXGP scores two motos per Grand Prix, each around thirty five minutes plus two laps, on a surface that changes completely between them. Ruts deepen, jump faces break down and the fastest line in moto one is frequently unusable in moto two. Riders who can adapt across that gap win championships; riders who memorise a line do not.

Prado's season has been built on starts. The holeshot in motocross is worth more than in any circuit discipline, because passing on a rutted, single line track requires either a significantly better rut choice or a mistake ahead. His gate technique, clutch release timed to the drop rather than the light, and an early upshift to keep the front wheel down, has produced first corner positions the rest of the field has had to chase.

Teutschenthal demonstrated the second half of the formula. The hard pack German surface produced a slick, braking bump heavy circuit where the risk of a front end washout was constant, and both motos were won by riding a line one metre wider than the obvious one to find grip on the edge of the ruts.

Physically, the closing rounds are the hardest of the season. Riders arrive with accumulated injuries, and the calendar includes sand rounds where the demands on forearms and grip strength are punishing. Championships are lost here to fatigue, not pace.

With four rounds left the lead is significant but not decisive: eight motos remain, and a single bad landing can end a campaign in a second. The rider in front knows that the safest way to defend this lead is to keep taking the holeshot.

The 2026 FIM MXGP World Championship standings capture the state of play recorded After Round 12, MXGP of Germany. Jorge Prado (MXGP) leads the riders classification on 612 points, 23 clear of Tim Gajser (MXGP) on 589, with Jeffrey Herlings (MXGP) third on 554. A lead of 23 points is a meaningful cushion at this stage of the year, but with 2 rounds still to run it is not yet a decisive one. The championship will be settled by how the front runners negotiate the rounds that remain, not by the margin they carry into them.

Behind the leading group the field is tightly compressed. Romain Febvre (MXGP) holds fourth on 521, Ruben Fernandez (MXGP) is fifth on 484, and Eli Tomac (SX Champion) completes the top six on 462. The spread across those three positions is just 59 points, which means a single strong weekend can reshape the order behind the title contenders. The midfield battle is where the championship depth is most visible, and where the cost of one bad round is highest.

In the teams classification, Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing leads on 612 points from HRC Honda Racing on 589 and Red Bull KTM Factory Racing on 991. The teams standings are often the more reliable indicator of outright pace, because they smooth out the individual bad weekends that every rider encounters across a full season. A team that places both its entries consistently in the points will accumulate constructors score at a rate that single car brilliance cannot match.

The depth of the teams championship reflects how competitive the Motocross / Supercross grid has become. Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing holds the lead on 612 points, but the gap to HRC Honda Racing on 589 is small enough that a single double points finish can close it. Behind them, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing sits third on 991, close enough to capitalise if either of the top two stumbles. The constructors race is a long game, and it rewards reliability over heroics.

The recent rounds have done most to shape the current standings. MXGP of Czech Republic at Loket, Czech Republic was won by Gajser, MXGP of Turkey at Afyon, Turkey went the way of Prado, and the most recent completed round, MXGP of Germany at Teutschenthal, Germany, was won by Prado. Each of those results shifted the points arithmetic at the top and reset the momentum that the title contenders carry into the next weekend.
