Ryan Blaney took a dramatic superspeedway victory in the Coke Zero Sugar 400 to punch his playoff ticket, while Kyle Larson locked up the regular season championship and the top seed.
Daytona in August is a restrictor plate race where the result is decided as much by the final two laps as by the preceding 160. The draft rewards the car that times its move to the front for the last time, and punishes the one that leads too early and gets shuffled out of the top line through the tri oval. Reading that moment is the whole skill.
Blaney made his move off turn four on the final lap, drawing the outside line with help from the Penske Chevrolets behind and edging ahead of the inside line as the field crossed the stripe. The win was his first of the season and it secured his place in the playoff field, transforming a points bubble afternoon into a championship reset.
Kyle Larson finished third, enough to clinch the regular season championship and the fifteen playoff points that come with the top seed. The Hendrick driver carried a consistent margin through the summer and arrives at the playoff opener as the favourite, with teammate Chase Elliott second in the standings and Denny Hamlin third.
The race was not without its casualties. A multi car incident on the backstretch in the second stage eliminated two playoff bubble cars and reset the cut line, while a late caution for debris bunched the field for the final sprint that produced the winning move.
The 2026 NASCAR Cup Series standings after Daytona show Larson leading on 917 points, 23 clear of Elliott on 894, with Hamlin third on 886. Blaney's win moves him to fifth. The playoff field is now set and the championship resets for the ten race run to Phoenix, with Larson carrying the top seed and the bonus points that come with it.
The next round is the playoff opener at Watkins Glen, scheduled for 13 Sep. It is the first of the ten race playoff run and a road course where track position and strategy decide the day. How the top seed handles the opening knockout round will indicate whether the regular season margin converts into a championship.
