Formula 1 – Azerbaijan Grand Prix | Baku City Circuit | 26 September 2026

Baku has a reputation for producing chaos, and the 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix did little to challenge it.

On a Saturday afternoon packed with incidents, Safety Cars and a dramatic fight for victory, George Russell emerged from the streets of Baku with his third victory of the 2026 Formula 1 season, but only after surviving an intense late challenge from Max Verstappen.

For Mercedes, it was another important result in a championship battle that remains very much alive.

For Red Bull, it was a double podium.

For McLaren, however, Baku turned into a weekend to forget.

Russell sets the tone

The foundations for Russell’s victory were laid in qualifying.

The Mercedes driver produced a stunning lap around the Baku City Circuit to take pole position with a 1:42.526, finishing eight-tenths clear of Charles Leclerc and just 0.001 seconds ahead of Oscar Piastri. (Formula 1® - The Official F1® Website)

It was Russell’s fifth pole of the season and his 12th career pole.

But the story behind the front row was almost as significant as Russell’s achievement.

Championship leader Kimi Antonelli crashed into the barriers during Q1, damaging his Mercedes and leaving himself down in 16th place on the starting grid.

With Russell starting from pole and Antonelli buried in the midfield, the championship picture suddenly looked very different.

A nightmare start for Antonelli

Antonelli’s qualifying accident meant the young Italian faced a huge recovery drive.

With an 81-point championship advantage over Russell coming into Baku, the Mercedes driver had plenty of breathing room, but Baku’s unforgiving walls meant that even a small mistake could have major consequences.

And Antonelli responded.

Starting 16th, he fought his way through the field to eventually finish fifth, collecting valuable points and limiting the damage from what had initially looked like a disastrous weekend. (FIA)

Russell, meanwhile, had the perfect opportunity to reduce the championship deficit.

And he wasn’t about to waste it.

Russell controls the opening stages

When the lights went out, Russell made the perfect getaway.

Piastri jumped Charles Leclerc at the start to move into second, but Russell immediately established control at the front.

Behind them, Verstappen and Hadjar began applying pressure to Piastri, with the two Red Bulls demonstrating impressive pace.

Piastri initially managed to keep both cars behind, but the McLaren’s race would eventually unravel.

Russell’s advantage at the front appeared comfortable.

Then Baku did what Baku does best.

Safety Cars change everything

The first Safety Car was triggered after an incident involving Williams driver Alex Albon.

Suddenly Russell’s advantage disappeared.

The field compressed and the Mercedes driver was forced to defend his position again at the restart.

Then came another major incident.

Franco Colapinto locked up and collided with Alpine teammate Pierre Gasly, with Lando Norris also caught up in the incident.

The second Safety Car was deployed, creating another complete reset.

Six drivers would ultimately fail to finish the race, including Norris, Albon, Fernando Alonso, Lance Stroll, Gasly and Colapinto. (Formula 1® - The Official F1® Website)

For Russell, the comfortable victory he had appeared to be heading towards had suddenly become anything but comfortable.

Verstappen turns up the pressure

With the field bunched together once again, Verstappen was suddenly within striking distance.

The Red Bull driver had spent much of the race working his way forward, and with the final Safety Car restart complete, he was presented with one final opportunity.

Russell held his nerve.

Lap after lap, Verstappen remained close enough to keep the pressure on, but Russell defended his advantage brilliantly.

The final laps became a straight fight between two of Formula 1’s biggest names.

Mercedes versus Red Bull.

Britain versus the Netherlands.

Russell versus Verstappen.

And when the chequered flag finally fell, the Mercedes crossed the line just 0.196 seconds ahead.

It was one of the narrowest victories of Russell’s career. (Formula 1® - The Official F1® Website)

Hadjar makes his return count

Behind the leading pair, Isack Hadjar produced one of the stories of the weekend.

Returning to Formula 1 after missing the previous three Grands Prix through injury, Hadjar immediately looked at home in the Red Bull.

He finished third to complete a double podium for the team alongside Verstappen.

His return had already been one of the talking points before the weekend, after Red Bull confirmed that he had recovered from the wrist injury that had kept him out of the Dutch, Italian and Spanish Grands Prix. (Reuters)

To return and immediately stand on the podium was a remarkable way to reintroduce himself to the F1 paddock.

Ferrari takes fourth and Mercedes salvages Antonelli’s weekend

Charles Leclerc brought his Ferrari home in fourth after starting second, while Antonelli’s recovery drive earned fifth.

Lewis Hamilton finished sixth for Ferrari, followed by Racing Bulls’ Arvid Lindblad.

Esteban Ocon and Oliver Bearman brought the Haas cars home in eighth and ninth, while Carlos Sainz completed the top ten for Williams. (FIA)

For Antonelli, fifth represented an important recovery after Friday’s qualifying accident.

For Russell, victory meant another major points haul.

And for the championship, the pressure continues to build.

McLaren left empty-handed

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the weekend was the performance of McLaren.

Piastri looked firmly in podium contention during the opening stages and briefly ran second after passing Leclerc at the start.

But the Australian eventually slipped backwards after losing ground to the Red Bulls.

A late error then compounded the disappointment.

Piastri finished 14th, while teammate Norris was classified as a non-finisher following the second Safety Car incident.

The result meant McLaren left Baku without a single championship point. (Formula 1® - The Official F1® Website)

For a team that had looked capable of fighting at the front, it was a brutal afternoon.

Baku delivers once again

The Azerbaijan Grand Prix has developed a reputation for unpredictability, and the 2026 edition added another chapter to that story.

A dominant qualifying performance.

A championship leader starting 16th.

Two Safety Car periods.

Six retirements.

A returning driver on the podium.

And a final-lap fight between Russell and Verstappen decided by less than two-tenths of a second.

That is Baku.

For George Russell, however, this wasn’t simply another chaotic Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

It was a victory that could prove hugely significant in the 2026 championship fight.

He converted pole into victory, survived two Safety Car restarts and resisted everything Verstappen could throw at him over the closing laps.

George Russell had the final word in Baku.

But with Kimi Antonelli still leading the championship and the season entering its decisive stages, the battle is far from finished.
